Own a rare piece of Alberta unique Canadianna.

In the 1960s James Wood (recently deceased) ordered Alberta Rose coloured Cougar XR7s from Universal Lincoln Mercury as a bonus for his sales team.

This Marti report is the industry standard for acceptance as to what a car was as it left the Ford factory.

Qualifying Rocky Mountain Insurance reps were issued a Purrple RMS to drive and many of these cars were seen throughout Alberta Saskatchewan and eventually BC Manitoba and outward provinces as they were sold to public after 1970.

Here's a picture of mine below in 1999 after repaint and new top. Picture taken at Cattle Point in Oak Bay BC. Seats and wheels have changed since and the paint is now all faded. Outside mirror is now chrome not painted as correct. Special Order painted cars got Chrome not body coloured Sport Mirrors as all other XR7s received. I strived for correctness and accuracy within reason and made several upgrades and improvements over the decades driving it fewer than 5000 miles in 18 years.

This however is closer to how I found 'er in 89.

Many were repainted to aqua, red or white after 1970 when the Rocky Mountain Insurance Company changed course. Few were left in original purrple paint Dupont # WT 9083 or PPG Purple Dawn. Original paint was IMRON, a very hard and durable acrylic enamel.

While not all is known about these rare Canadian only XR7 models we do know that      about 15 of 100ish still exist in varying degrees of condition.

The unofficial but thorough Rocky Mountain Special website is here RMS XR7

I have owned my Purrple Cougar for near twenty years now having saved it from certain death at the hand of not one but two auto recyclers.

I bought and re-assembled the car into what is an older restoration now. pics mid 90s

                                    made paint in 1999

Has a new rebuilt engine as well as new seats headliner carpet trunk liners much chrome and trim work.

New exhaust , carb starter alt all redone all correct for the 351 4 barrel version which all 69 RMS XR7s recieved. This one is rewired to Electric choke as Ford would have done it. The 69 correct parts are in trunk.

This car needs to be repainted and a new vinyl top as both are ten years old now showing their age.

Car has been kept dry inside but the outside has suffered. And the top has a rip. XR7 crests are in being restored and go with.

Interior is new, all four seats as well as headliner and carpet.

Steering wheel woodgrain was renewed as was the Rim Blow horn switch.

Panels were recoloured and look pretty good.

New quarter panels were installed 12ish years ago and the car is pretty rust free.

Here we look back at one exhaust pipe and a frame rail, driver's side. Red oxide was applied some 15 years ago.

There is some rust under the drivers seat base along the weld line for seat support (not shown) that are not a problem at this time but at sometime one would want to repair the pan at the seat support.

Torque boxes have been repaired as required.

Car is very original down to Canadian Tire Bias Ply whitewalls which also should be replaced.

Mechanically the car is good everything works including the 8 track player.

There is a low fuel relay included.

Car has several options as did all RMS 69 XR7s

Tilt steering with swing a way option

351 4V 290 HP Windsor

About 125,000 original miles while the engine has less than 2000 miles since overhaul and new interior. I have not driven this car 5000 miles in 18 years of ownership.

Interior less than 2000 miles on. (door pull is on, not shown in this pic above)

Rear seat is brand new  no ones sat back there yet.

This car needs a paint job a new vinyl top new tyres and the rad could be recored..

It runs and drives fine as is. Glass is all good condition Sun-X Tinted on doors and rears.

Could be driven from BC to Alberta or anywhere. I finally drove 1500 miles in this car in 2005 after not driving since 1999. Engine was redone 2000. New pistons flat tops 10.5:1 as original.

Carb is a 600 not 450 Autolite which wakes them up quite a bit.

I restored all my cars to as factory specifications with a few FoMoCo upgrades on choke and emissions..

It is all stock. Added the 1970 IMCO.

Alternator is concourse correct sans stamp

Correct major components right down to the point type ignition.

Paint has lost its shine is completely oxidized with a few scratches a tiny dent and a few small bubbles showing on this ten year old paint job.

I had booked time with a painter to repaint this car but he pushed me back twice and so now I am offering the car up as is with faded paint and top. Its $10,000 away from being a  mid twenties value. Nada Values

Universal logo is incorrect. Take it off before repainting and fill the holes.

I also have added the 1970 emissions system IMCO which helps during cold starts and also prevents over heats by providing more initial timing when hot and less when cold. The correct non IMCO pieces are in trunk.

This particular Cougar was featured in Canadian Classics Magazine Dec 2000 issue.

I believe these 1969 Purrple Cougars inspired the Dodge dealers to create the 1970 Pink Swingers sold in Edmonton.
