"Vicki" my 1969 Cougar XR7 convertible.
This XR7 belonged to my Uncles girlfriend back in 1971 when I took my first ride in a convertible of any kind.
Less than 30 years later the Cougar was mine and I began the collection of parts for restoration while the body was in getting done.
 
Kevin Marti tells me that there were nine dark aqua and white xr7 convertibles w/390.
Of those nine, seven were automatic C6 transmission.
This 390 XR7 was one of the seven and now converted to 4 speed.
According to Phil Parcells and the CCoA database this Cougar is THE ONLY KNOWN DARK AQUA with WHITE LEATHER INTERIOR 
390
 CONVERTIBLE KNOWN TO EXIST, in any condition with any transmission period.
 
This Cougar has been stored off road indoors for about 20 years.
 I bought many new parts for this Cougar including all new brakes, rotors, drums, pads, shoes, etc, rebuilt control valve, new lower control arms, upper ball joints, upper inner shafts, new door rubbers new convertible top, new pads for top new liner for top, had all seats re-upholstered in white leather as original, new carpet, underlay, trunk liner and filler board, new rear leafs, shocks and more

 390 engine was rebuilt when I got it however I opened the engine resealed with new gaskets and seals as well as new bearings oil pump timing chain and moly rings.
Engine has correct Autolite carb, Autolite alternator case and most all electrical parts were replaced with NOS or were rebuilt or replacement including NOS intermittent wiper switch, NOS ignition switch, NOS Headlight switch, NOS Oil pressure switch and NOS solenoid, replacement regulator, rebuilt alternator in autolite case. Engine has the correct and hard to find heat shield riser for the hot air feed to snorkel for cold starts. Correct $1500 390 air breather with correct and functioning vacuum operated side door. Distributor re-bushed new breaker plate, yellow top Factory coil. NOS air tube.
Engine runs very well and should give decades of trouble free service.

 
C6 trans was in rebuilt before I got the car in 1999. Works fine however I have installed a 1967 Mustang GT 390 4 speed trans, 390 flywheel, 390 C6OA bell housing, as well as speedo cable, clutch pedal, yoke, drive shaft, transmission cross member, Z bar, shifter, clutch fork boot and adjuster, linkages and the two Z bar pivots.
Competition Plus Hurst shifter with new install kit new Back up light harness.

 
9" differential is a 28 spline locking 3.25 ratio, is the FoMoCo original and has been completely rebuilt.

 

 

 


 

 


 

 

 
Body is very sound and straight. It is painted code F base clear Dark Aqua Metallic as factory and the paint , after several attempts is outstanding...
Inside of doors were epoxied, trunk lid was metal repaired under lip, 1/4 panels were removed and the rear sections behind wheels, in front of wheels and arches were repaired and reattached after painting the inside of the 1/4 and the wheel house area. This Cougar has it's original convertible ONLY 1/4 panels.
Rust almost always found in the rear torque box area was repaired using correct gauge.090" satin material bent to correct shape and welded in place of the area that always rusts on these Convertibles. Other areas of repair were the outside of the floor pan under the inner rocker. Sections of the floor were sectioned and replaced along the four outer edges of the floor pan, under the rocker (inner).
The Torque boxes are in fantastic shape as are the frame rails and floor pan. Rear trunk drop offs were replaced.

Rechromed were Front and Rear bumpers, back-up lights, door handles inner and outer, bumper-ettes, Windshield header, convertible boot trims, grill center, gas door trims.
 
 The grille halves and taillights have not been re-chromed as decent originals in driver good or better condition are adorning this Cougar currently or add $1250 for these items to be re-chromed.
The windshield trim and stainless pieces door pieces were professionally polished to a mirror as new finish as were the hood trim and fender extension trims.

The Back-up Light Lens are NOS not repro.
Side marker lights are NOS with NOS lens
NOS bolts for lower control arms and rear leafs.
NOS hi pressure PS lines from Cascade Classics
NOS Engine insulator mounts
New Motorcraft shocks and new rear leafs with correct new shackles from Cascade Classics.
NOS headlight switch
 NOS door Ignition Trunk and glove box locks.
Power window switches are NOS.
Turn Signal Flasher is NOS

Cougar has the dealer installed trunk release
This car could be a driver weekend show or could be taken apart and finishes renewed as there is over spray on many components from the paint job both in the engine bay and under carriage. I have cleaned up some of it but there is some over spray left.

 
Door Panels are un-restored power window panels in correct white. They need to be re-dyed to 1990 GM Camel Beige code 57 to match factory colour replicated on dash and seats.
Seats are completely redone front and rear in white leather correctly colour matched to the original colour.
Rear convertible inner 1/4s were recovered in white vinyl and have new ash trays.
 The Console is a Chris Brost restored, has a nice original aqua 3 rib arm rest.
 Seat belts are made of NOS webbing in aqua as factory w/original buckles and ends.

Aqua dash pad is nice, a little stiff on top but not cracked or damaged.
Extra set of nice lens are included for dash.
XR7 clock was reworked ten years ago and may or may not work now, original not bad lens included.
Power Ventilation flows air thru the centre dash register a nice feature for convertibles at night after a swim and is a rare option with NOS water gate valve.

Nice factory boot cover in white (WCCC) as well as the factory boot bag (CC) for the cover.
The convertible top is new with rear glass window new pads seals and the convertible visor clamps and header were replated to satin chrome finish as factory.
The convertible top cylinders have been replaced. Factory top motor and lines.
Top is on frame as new.
 
Restored RimBlow wheel with new switch and pad inserts.
 
Front and rear valances are nice originals.
Original C9W mufflers adorn the undercarriage, the pipes are thin and will soon need complete exhaust.
Has good dual exhaust factory hangers.
Good Sun X side glass.

This car is a mix of the best used parts I collected over 20 years plus NOS, replacement and rebuilt parts in order to maintain a theme of originality.
I have added a Cruise Control System 
Ford 10 year battery new hoses rubbers wires points cap plugs etc many of which are Motorcraft replacement parts direct from Ford.
Rad recored, NOS (not repro) shroud, New fan clutch, New Fuel pump and complete fuel line set.
New brake lines throughout. Booster is a rebuilt unit with new master and Dot5 fluid used throughout all new brake system.

Five correct Cougar Styled Steel Wheels NOS lug nuts and 4 or 5 New Caps for wheels.
Jack included. As are decals for under hood and trunk and door..
It had been my intention to make a show quality Cougar out of this rare only known 390 Aqua/white XR7 convertible known to exist and therefore all my best pieces were put into this Car.
 I have about $30K invested with 4 speed, trim and other pieces.
 With recent CJ BJ sale of a 69 convertible in the low $70K range now is a good time to re-owner this ONLY KNOWN Dark Aqua and White 390 XR7.
 All (some hard to find) parts are included plus extra pieces and duplicates of some pieces.

What makes this car rare is the fact that it is a 390 convertible.
 What makes it THE ONLY KNOWN is that its Dark Aqua and White 390 XR7 convertible.
 Other A&W Cougars exist though none have the 390. Two are 428s Five are 351s and ONE is this 390 Cougar XR7.
